Tool materials for cutting difficult-to-machine materials

The high temperature hardness of CBN is the highest among the existing tool materials, and it is most suitable for the cutting of difficult-to-machine materials. The new coated carbide is an ultra-fine grain alloy as a substrate, the selection of high-temperature hardness of good coating materials to be coated, this material has excellent wear resistance, but also can be used for difficult-to-machine materials cutting one of the excellent tool materials.

Titanium and titanium alloys in difficult-to-machine materials can be cut with diamond tools due to their high chemical activity and low thermal conductivity.CBN sintered body tools are suitable for cutting materials such as high-hardness steels and cast irons, and the higher the CBN content, the longer the tool life, and the cutting dosage can be increased accordingly. It is reported that CBN sintered body without binder has been developed.

Diamond sintered body tools are suitable for cutting aluminum alloys, pure copper and other materials. Diamond tools have sharp cutting edges, high thermal conductivity, and less heat retention at the tip of the cutting edge, which keeps the occurrence of chip tumors and other adhesions to a minimum. When cutting pure titanium and titanium alloys, the choice of single crystal diamond tool cutting is more stable and can extend tool life.

Coated carbide tools are suitable for cutting almost all kinds of difficult-to-machine materials, but the performance of the coating (single coating and composite coating) varies greatly, therefore, should be based on different processing objects, the selection of suitable coated tool materials. It has been reported that diamond coated carbide and DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated carbide have been developed recently, which further expand the application range of coated tools and can be used in the field of high-speed cutting and machining.
